Don’t come any closer.

Just read my thoughts.

What makes a good plate of Hokkien Mee aka Fried Prawn Mee?

Posted by lefthandside on February 28, 2008

1. Lard

2. Gloooey noodles, stir-fried but still slightly wet.

3. No fishy taste from the sotongs

4. A tinge of burnt taste from the wok

5. Fresh prawns

The hokkien mee I had last night was lacking in all of the above except No. 1.  It was so disappointing:(

gimpbrush_1.jpg

Created these brushes for GIMP again.  They’re so simple to do actually. Especially with 2.2.4 when you can resize the brushes. I think I’m spending too much time on GIMP but I’m just amazed at the number of effects you can create with it.  Why pay for Photoshop?  GIMP is good enough for me.

I’m not a drinking buddy

Posted by lefthandside on February 27, 2008

I only had like 10ml of Choya Royal Honey and my face is already hot. My head would start to throb even it’s a small glass of wine, spirit or beer.  A second or third glass would mean rashes for the next few days. I’ve never like the taste of alcohol drinks so I’m actually fine with not drinking.  I still remember the times in uni when we went drinking.  Most of the times I would be the most sober one in the group. My principle is to stop at 2-3 glasses cos I know the terrible after-effects that would haunt me. Actually I don’t understand why people like drinking..hahah.  Red wine is still bearable and it’s supposedly good for health if you drink 1 small glass a day. Perhaps my ”ba zi” dun match with alcohol.  Give me fresh fruit juice anytime! It’s cheaper somemore!

I think most some people drink to relax and for social purposes.  There are 4 categories of people that are most commonly seen in clubs and pubs.

1.  Those who lie on the sofas in the clubs, drunk and fast asleep.

2.  Those who are vomitting in toilets and the outside of the clubs.

3.  The ones who laughs or cries at anything and anyone.

4.  The good drinkers or those who know how to limit their intake(normally drivers).

Ok. Time to sleep now.

Making eggs with GIMP

Posted by lefthandside on February 26, 2008

eggs.jpg

Was playing around with GIMP and reading some of the users’ posted tutorials.  I know it’s too soon to be Easter yet but I made some eggs for practice.  You can refer to the tut here.

I like the pink egg so much.. The shadows and light source aren’t realistic though:P

I’m gonna learn how to make reflections next:)

Of peepers and perverts

Posted by lefthandside on February 25, 2008

I shuddered at the sight of the red chair lying outside the house, right next to the window of my room. Had someone been using this chair to peep into my room?  It’s not like it had never happen before. Thanks to the strategic location of my house ,which was just beside the lift and stairs, we have had encounters with perverts and thieves many times.  Being on the lowest level in the building made it worse as these people had a greater chance of escaping even if we caught them.

I remember an incident very clearly that took place when I was about 6 to 9 years old(I dun remember how old I was). I saw my sis’s uniform outside my house at the very position where I saw the red chair today.  Puzzled, I asked my mum why.  IT was only then that we realised someone had took it out from the window to steal the money in pockets.  I vaguely remember my mum grabbing a stick and walking around to find the burglar.  I thought it was quite a funny sight.

Then in sec sch days, there was a mentally disabled pervert who followed my sis home one day. He lived just across the street and we always avoided him.  Anyway she was followed right up to the doorstep I think. That same evening, my sis saw his eyes at the windows in the room and screamed out loud. Shocked, I screamed together as well not knowing what really happened.  We lodged a police report shortly.  Soon, we heard that the guy was sent to a hospital for the mentally-illed. It seemed that there had been other cases against him in the neighbourhood as well.

Well the story doesn’t end here.  A few years ago, my dad saw a hand creeping right up the lower window panes. It was probably a burglar trying to get in.  I must say that aluminium windows are really weak.  It doesn’t take much strength to open them from outside.  So right now, we have permanently fixed the sides of the lower panes with a plate of steel to prevent anyone from opening it from outside.  I can’t open them from the inside too.

My encounters with perverts went a step further.  During varity days, a peeping tom was caught peeping at gals bathing in the toilet next to my hostel room.  Guess what the police found in his bag?  Lingerie of some of the gals, including yours truly!  A total embarrassment when the officers came to take our statement.  I remember one of the questions was how much they were worth.  What’s more horrifying was I had to collect them back after the case was closed. I recalled trying to ask the officers to throw them away but they couldn’t as they were evidence and they needed me to sign it out. So I had to go all the way down to the station and I disposed them immediately at home. Can’t imagine what had been done with them..Yucks!!  *Shakes off terrible images*

So the red chair reminds me of all these.  I’m tempted to give the chair seat a thick red coat of red paint and see if someone is really stepping on it. Or maybe slap on some super sticky superglue and see what happens.  That would be fun:P

Bedok Jetty@East Coast Park

jetty-resized.jpg

It was a hot Thurs day afternoon but there were so many people fishing at the jetty.  Mainly uncles though and I think they had a good catch cos I heard them exclaiming to 1 latecomer that he had just missed the good harvest.  And what were they fishing for?  Basically small fishes I think.   I dun dare to take pics of them upclose lah.  Cos to me, taking pics of normal pple without their permission/knowledge is quite rude.

The srong wind was making my hair go everywhere.  Super messy.  I didn’t realise that my sunglasses are so reflective until I saw these photos!  Can see my 2 hands holding the camera so clearly..hahahah. Short hair suits me better hor…

The “It’s not ok” post

Posted by lefthandside on February 23, 2008

I’m getting appalled by the increasing number of people seen eating on trains/buses, playing their music loudly using their phones and the more absurd things like cutting toenails and fingernails in public places. The rules and signs are obviously there for a reason.  Are you really that hungry to need to eat on the train? Why can’t people just finish the food before entering the train stations?  I’m ok if it’s just a sweet or a drink in a bottle but NOT if it’s burger or fries etc.  Imagine the next person who needs to hold the pole after u’ve held it with ur greasy fingers after eating the fries. Yucks… Oh and I’ve seen 1 person digging his nose and wiping it on the pole in the train before so now I hardly touch them unless it’s absolutely neccessary.  It’s really these people who are encouraging cockroaches to roam on the buses cos there’s food for them.  Thankfully I haven’t seen any on the trains yet.  Are their nails really so long that they need to be trimmed on the train-ride??! It’s sooo disgusting and totally a put-off.  Please lah, the train is not your home man.  Of course, most of the time we won’t say a word or two to tell-off the person cos no one likes to make a scene or we’re just too timid to make any noise.

The problem here is that these people have a ”It’s ok as long as no one complains.” or ”It’s ok as long as no one knows.” or “It’s ok as long as the person does not spill food over me/on the bus.” attitude.  It’s like a “mind your own business” thing.  Would they behave like this in their own office? I know that only a minority of people are guilty of such actions but if it becomes an accepted practice, it could become the “This work is urgent so it’s ok to fake my boss’s signature as long as no one knows.” attitude.  This might be a little over-the-hill example but that’s just to bring my point across.  It’s not OK at all!  Aren’t we supposed to be moving towards a more gracious society? What happened to that campaign?  These are the things that I thought we should be improving as a society but yet it also seems that we have not moved forward.  In fact, I think we were much more disciplined way back in the late 1990s.  Does it have anything to do with us with more being relaxed as we progress?

There’s 101 things that can be written about this but I’m ending it here. The next time I see someone cutting nails on the train, I’m going to stop him/her.  I hope I won’t end up with a black eye so keep ur fingers crossed for me!

Multiple personalities

Posted by lefthandside on February 23, 2008

Is it normal for people to display different personalities/behaviour to various groups of people?  It’s just like how a person who, normally likes to stay in the room and demands peace at home, acts totally different when she’s out with different groups of people.  With college frens, she’s the funny gal and always cracking jokes but becomes the thinker in another.  Of course at work she shows yet another side to display professionalism in handling work and people.

I guess after all. such behaviour would help a person to balance the inner pyschological aspect to maintain saneness.  They also go hand in hand with the roles that we play all our lives, of being a daughter, son, student, friend, employee/employer, parent and if u’re lucky, a grandparent.
