Cheap and good food

With heat on rising food prices recently, there’s a lot of price comparisons going on for hawker food. Everyone’s been complaining about the pain on their pockets. It’s not surprising that some stalls are making use of this time to raise prices but I would say a majority of them are absorbing the cost too, especially those from the heartlands.  I just went to the market and bought a big packet of Chinese mee siam for $2.  The portion was pretty huge and I couldn’t even finish it alone even though it’s super duper delicious.  The Mee Rubus at this stall is also very nice!!  I would say it’s way too much if prices are adjusted by $0.50 just due to the inflation because the actual increase is only probably less than $0.10-$0.20 if you were to divide the costs equally on the number of customers each stall would get.  An average stall can sell about 150-200 servings( a very low figure liao) each day from dawn till night so he would earn an extra of $75 per day if he raises price by $0.50 for each serving.  The raw food prices are not so inflated to this extent. Their profit is most likely $1 for each serving.  Do some maths and you will know how much restaurants are earning! Yet they pay so low for their serving crew..

The Great Cockroach Fight

The stupid damn cockroach flew towards me.. super big somemore!! Thankfully my reflex was fast to swing it off my face and got up from the floor. Dunno where it came from man..Anyway it flew into the storeroom and I went to the kitchen to arm myself with Shieldtox. I sprayed some at the door and placed the insecticide in the kitchen again, this time nearer to me of course. Thought it would end up hiding in the store at first but moments later, it flew out from the room towards the kitchen. I was watching carefully of course. Kaoz, din even have a chance to spray at it. So I took a section of Classifieds as my shield, ran into the kitchen to get the insecticide again and at the same time to see where the roach had flown to. This time I managed to spray at it. It somehow dropped from the cabinet to the top of the fridge and I quickly ran back to the living room. Couldn’t see where it was now but I could hear it trying to flap its wings. It wasn’t able to fly anymore and was soon scuttling around on the kitchen floor, half-fainted and probably disoriented. Used this chance to finish it off. It finally flipped and laid in one corner, struggling to get off its back. I waited to see how long it would last before heaving the one last breathe. After 10-15 mins the legs were still moving!! Incredulous! And this was despite repeated sprays at it to hasten the process. Finally I picked up the charcoal tongs and chuck it away. I don’t have so much time to waste man.

The sauna question

Years back, someone once posed this question to me. “A person into a sauna for the first time and felt terrible.  He found it hard to breathe and the heat was getting to him.  What should he do?” What would be your answer?

For most people, perhaps their first reaction would be to get out of the sauna. Actually, the man should continue to stay inside the sauna.  He will get more comfortable as time passes and eventually enjoy the whole process of sweating it out.  The morale of the story is that whenever you are in an uncomfortable, fearful or dreadful situation, you should grind your teeth and persevere no matter what you encounter.  If you went out, you would probably never step into a sauna again because you only remember the bad feelings from your first experience and you’ve never enjoyed the end results.

Jus some words for thought….

(On the hindside, of course you don’t stay too long in the sauna lah.. too much of a good thing is bad for you too)

找回自己

某天早上，醒来的时候竟然发现自己好像清醒了。好难形容这种感觉。真奇怪。

It’s been a long time since…

I last killed a cockroach. Or rather, that I lifted a finger to kill the damn crawler. Almost every other week I would find one lurking in the kitchen and I would “summon” my half sleeping parents to take care of it. I’m just afraid that it would fly at me ..haha but my parents would just take some handy wipes or a piece of cloth,crush it and down it goes into the toilet bowl. Not me, I never dared to pick up the dead crawlers even after they were dead. Absolutely not… don’t ask me why.

When I was younger I would take an empty shoebox to “trap” it and let my parents deal with it. There’s been a lot more cockroaches in the kitchen recently. Must be my big mouth jinxed myself again. 我记得有一次一位朋友吃饭时就聊起了蟑螂。他不是本地人。他告诉我他家里很多小强，请灭虫专家也没用。而我接着就一口咬定，笑他说是家里肮脏。其实我只是开开玩笑。没想到过几个月后，当我没工作时，发现其实我厨房也有好多蟑螂。真是大嘴巴！其实很大的原因是我们都住在二楼。这些小强们往垃圾曹上爬就很容易进来了。不然用飞更直接。想想那时候的语气好像不是很好。。应该像在嘲笑他，但他也无可奈何。如果这位“朋友”刚好“路过“的话（应该只有百分之0.001的机会），我要跟他说我已经正式把我所说的话都收回来ok!哈哈哈。。。 my house is in an equal state man.

Anyway back to the cockroach just now… I actually took up the insecticide and sprayed at the bugger. I was afraid it would “scamper” away on the floor so I stood on the dining chair instead. I forgot it had wings for that few moments! When I saw it flap its wings, I literally jumped down the chair for my life and ran away. Thank goodness it didn’t take flight. I think the insecticide quite powerful lah.. I only sprayed once and it went a bit bonkers .. crawling about frantically everywhere! I retreated to the living room and it somehow crawled towards the same direction to my horror. Luckily it finally flipped and fainted at one corner of the living room and I asked my mum to dispose the body.

Now I just need to put that insecticide in a more accessible place and we’ll see more of these buggers dead.

Perhaps I should keep a cat and it help me get rid of all these things. But the thought of it playing these insects with her paws then me playing with her freaked me out. But I really like cats lah. I miss the close relationships I share with them. Their purring and going rd my legs. They’re so adorable, so independent, so elegant and yet so snobbish. I have even thought of a name for my future  cat.  She’s going to be called Money……Meow. Just think how nice tocall out.. “Money come! Money stay!” heeheehee….

Oh and Happy April Fool’s Day. This post isn’t a joke though.
