Posted by lefthandside on May 17, 2008

I have started the translation from the Chinese version into English for one litre of tears.  You can find it here.

I will put it up on my sidebar too.

Are you trying to be a cynic by being cynical?

Posted by lefthandside on March 3, 2008

A Cynic is

1. A person who believes most people are motivated by selfishness;

2. A person whose outlook is scornfully and often habitually negative; or

3. A member of a sect of ancient Greek philosophers who believed virtue to be the only good and self-control to be the only means of achieving virtue.

 Being cynical means

1. showing contempt for accepted standards of honesty or morality by one’s actions; or

2. being bitterly or sneeringly distrustful, contemptuous, or pessimistic.

Words

Posted by lefthandside on February 16, 2008

There are many times when I had edited my grammar on the posts and I’m sure that there are still many out there which I have not detected.   What’s the best way to write or to express myself were the questions I would also often think as I conjured my thoughts while typing. Could I have written it in a more concise manner, without beating round the bush?  Indeed, language is a powerful tool and mastering one is not easy.  There are endless ways to present information by using different choices of words. Newspaper headlines often take advantage of this effect to grab the attention of potential readers.
My theory is that it is only through writing in correct English that I am able to speak the language in a more appropriate manner, with less grammatical mistakes.  Therefore, I’m going to devote some posts to share ways to improve my command of the language.  I’m not going to give up my wah piangs, duhhhhs, aiyos and Singlish though.  There will definitely be posts still peppered with such words because I think they add a veri unique feel to an individual’s post. IMHO.
